Condemning the mismanagement of the recruitment rally in Karnah area of Kupwara district, which has resulted in chaos and injuries to many people, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Tuesday said the Territorial Army and police should have properly assessed the response to the recruitment initiative and taken precautions accordingly.

In a statement, the senior party leader and Member of Parliament, Muzzafar Hussain Baig, said it is unfortunate that many youth seeking jobs had to face bullets while chaos prevailed at the rally as a result of incompetent handling of the initiative by Territorial Army and the police.

He expressed his solidarity with the victims of the violence and demanded best medical treatment to the bullet hit youth. Baig, who represents North Kashmir in the Lok Sabha, said the disproportionate response, to seven vacancies advertised by the Territorial Army, should have been envisaged and the last minute change in the criteria for applications was always fraught with danger.

He said that fact that more than 3000 boys turned up for only seven vacancies offers an idea about the magnitude of unemployment in the state. “It is obvious that something beyond cosmetic recruitment drives would need to be done to generate remunerative and respectable jobs for educated, literate, skilled, semiskilled and unskilled youth of the state,” he added.
