Bandipora’s Saderkoot Bala Quarry Sealed Over Alleged Illegal Mining

SRINAGAR: The Geology and Mining Department has blocked approach roads to a stone quarry in Saderkoot Bala area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district following reports of illegal mining during night hours, officials said on Tuesday.

The department has also prohibited mining, excavation, extraction, quarrying and related activities at the site, except those specifically authorised by the competent authority under applicable rules.

According to a public notice issued by the District Mineral Officer, Bandipora, no person has been allowed to reopen, fill, clear obstructions from or otherwise facilitate access through the blocked roads leading to the quarry.

The notice also bars owners and operators of LNTs, JCBs, tippers and other heavy machinery from parking or stationing their vehicles within a 100-metre radius of the quarry.

Vehicles found violating the restriction could be seized, and their owners or operators face action under law, the notice said.

The department has warned that violations could lead to registration of an FIR and other legal proceedings.

The restrictions, however, have drawn resentment among some residents who said the quarry has provided livelihood to several local families.

“We understand that illegal mining should be stopped, but the restrictions should not punish people who depend on legitimate manual work at the quarry,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Saderkoot Bala.

Another resident, Mohammad Yousuf, said blocking the approach roads has made it difficult for people involved in quarry-related work to earn a living.

“Many families here have been dependent on this work for years. The government should distinguish between illegal mining and the lawful work of local residents,” he said.

Ghulam Nabi, a local, urged the administration to resolve the issue instead of keeping the quarry inaccessible indefinitely. “We want the authorities to take action against those involved in illegal mining, but at the same time they should find a solution for local people whose livelihoods are linked to the quarry,” he said.

Residents have appealed to the administration to review the restrictions and take a decision on the long-pending quarry issue, while ensuring that any authorised activity is carried out in accordance with the rules.

Officials said the directions would remain applicable to all concerned and warned that any attempt to violate the restrictions would invite strict action—(KNO)
