The Committee further said that the regions may face power deficiency of nearly 12 percent during the non-solar hours.

According to the official figures, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is likely to face power paucity of 400 MWs against the available power position during the solar peak hours in the month of October.

It also said that during the non-solar peak hours, the regions may face a power shortage of 337 MWs.

Stating the revised anticipated power supply position for October-2026 for both the Union Territories, NRPC said that there will likely be a peak availability of 2450 MWs against the requirement of 2850 MWs—keeping a loophole of 400 MWs during the peak solar hours.

The figures further said that during the peak non-solar hours, J&K and Ladakh are likely to require 2872 MWs of power against the availability of 2535 MWs.

As already reported, Jammu and Kashmir will likely require nearly an additional 450 Megawatts (MWs) of power during the peak hours in the coming three years.

The official documents in this regard had said that in the ongoing fiscal, Jammu and Kashmir may have a peak demand of 3813 MWs.

It also said that in the coming fiscal 2027-28, the region is likely to require additional 151 MWs of power during the peak time with a total demand projection of 3964 MWs.

Furthermore, the projections said that in the year 2028-29, Jammu and Kashmir may require additional 300 MWs of power during the peak hours in comparison to the projected demand of the ongoing fiscal

The official figures also said that in the year 2029-30, Jammu and Kashmir will likely have a peak demand of 4262 MWs that amounts to 449 MWs of additional energy demand to the projection made for the year 2026-27.

Over the past 12 years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a more than 24 per cent increase in power demand.

The Government of India (GoI) had said that from the fiscal 2014-15 to 2025-26, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a surge in demand of 3,971 MU. (KNO)
