SRINAGAR: A militant killed in a gunfight with the counter-insurgent forces at Wanigam Bala area of Kreeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed outfit, police said.
A police spokesman in a statement said that acting on specific information generated by Police regarding presence of a militant in village Wanigam Bala area of Kreeri in Baramulla, a joint cordon & search operation was launched by Police, Army (29RR) & SSB (2nd Bn) in the said area.
The spokesman said that during the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militant fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter.
“In the initial exchange of fire, 02 Army Jawans and a police personnel received injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment where their condition is stable,” he said.
“In the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter,” he added.
The police spokesman identified the slain militant as Akhtar Hussain Bhat alias Abid Bhai son of Ghulam Ahmad Bhat, resident of Trich, Kupwara, who was affiliated with the JeM. Police said Bhat was missing since July 16 this year.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 01 AK-47 Rifle, 03 AK-Magazines, 07 AK-Rounds, 01 Pouch and 01 Bag have been recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
He added that iin this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.
“People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” said police spokesman in a statement.
