Demanding judicial probe, Peoples Democratic Party Tuesday condemned killing of a person belonging to Gujjar community in Saror Samba area and said that government must avoid “selective approach” in eviction drive and police should also follow Standard Operation procedures while dealing mob.

Addressing a press conference at Party Office in Jammu, senior PDP leaders and former Ministers Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali and Naeem Akhtar condemned killing of a person of Gujjar family in Saroor Samba and demanded Governor NN Vohra to act on the matter immediately by ordering judicial probe. Both the leaders also demanded compensation and employment to the next kin of the deceased, a statement issued by Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali said this evening.

Terming the eviction drive as “selective”, Zulfkar and Akhter said, “PDP is not against eviction drive and they also want to vacate encroachments in the interest of the people but the drive should not be selective. Why we cannot start eviction drive from influential and wealthy people and why we are starting it from poor houseless people.”

“PDP has clear stand on the issue that there should be proper policy on the matter and those evicted must be given houses at alternate places so that they don’t suffer. They said that Union Government is having good plan for rehabilitation of 5 Crore houseless people and Union government should extend this scheme for these nomads and other houseless population of J&K so that the situation like today do not arise.”

“First, government should rehabilitate these houseless people and then they should vacate the occupied land from them,” they said.

Questioning the action of Police, PDP leaders said, “forces have not adopted restraint while dealing mob in the area. The situation could have tackled but it was not tackled which resulted in death of person belonging to nomad family. They said that when there is set Standing Operating Procedure (SOP) for dealing mob, why the SOP was not followed in the area? Fire was opened in irresponsible manner on civilian so there is need to fix responsibility.” “Governor Administration must take this issue seriously and act immediately on the matter.”
