The grenade explosion which took place in Batamalo, area of the city Wednesday, was aimed at a police vehicle carrying a prisoner facing militancy charges. He was being taken to Baramulla, to produce him before a court when the suspected militants attacked the police vehicle injuring four policemen and the accused prisoner.

Sources told Kashmir Life that the accused prisoner Shakeel  Ahmad, a resident of Kangan area of district Ganderbal,  is facing militancy charges and is undergoing detention under Public Safety Act (PSA).

 “Shakeel Ahmad is facing militancy charges and he is lodged in central jail Srinagar,” sources said adding that on Wednesday, he was first taken to police station Panthachowk, and then the police vehicle carrying him was on way to Baramulla, to produce him before a court when it came under a grenade attack.

“The suspected militants lobbed a grenade on the same police vehicle near bus stand Batamalo, injuring at least four police men and Shakeel,” sources said adding that Shakil and the injured policemen are undergoing treatment.
