The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Ali Mohammad Sagar has said that the government is committed to hold elections to the Block Development Councils (BDCs) as soon as possible.

The Minister was speaking at a meeting convened to discuss the recommendations/ suggestions given by the committee constituted for the purpose.

Sagar said that the government believes in ensuring democratic decentralization of the powers to the ground level and in this regard various suggestions/recommendations made by the committee would be given due credence. He said that the State Act is a comprehensive one and any suggestions made by different quarters would be looked into.

The Minister said that the government is keen to put in place the 3-tiers of the Panchayati Raj System and consequently the elections to the BDCs would be held very soon as has been maintained by the Chief Minister.

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Mir Saifullah, Member Legislator Council, R. S. Sharma, Commissioner Secretary, Rural Development, Farooq Ahmed Peer, Commissioner Secretary, Law, G. H. Tantray and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
