NC leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Engineer Rashid did not do anything illegal as the Supreme Court has stayed the particular section of the RPC that bans cow slaughter. He said the House will have to take a stringent action against the BJP lawmakers who carried out an attack on Engineer Rashid.

“If the Speaker does not take stringent action against the MLAs who attacked Engineer Rashid, he loses the moral right to be the custodian of the hours,” Omar told reporters after leading the entire opposition out of the houses. “If opposition is being punished on every drop of the hat, why cannot he act against his own men for the attack?”

In hours, Omar repeatedly asked the treasury benches to apologize to the member who was attacked. Even Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed suggested, repeatedly to his Deputy Nirmal Singh to apologize. Dr Singh, initially said it was unfortunate, he later said he condemns it. But he did not apologize which led to the entire opposition walking out of the house.

Later talking to reporters Omar said, “since the Supreme Court has stayed the particular clause of the RPC, Rashid has not actually jolted any law.” “I do not know, for what crime he was punished by the BJP MLAs,” Omar said. “If this is the way the lawmakers will behave, what will happen to the house and its decorum,” he asked.

Engineer Rashid was seen being consoled by the NC lawmakers. He told Kashmir Life that he actually feared he would be killed in the house as lot of BJP men caught him and tried to suffocate him. “It was because of NC that I was saved,” he said. “They were one or two, they (BJP) were many.”
