A former Indian diplomat turned author has claimed in his book that Gen Parvez Musharraf was ready to wage a war against India to ‘take over Srinagar’ much before 1999 Kargil war, but was stopped by the then Pakistan prime minister, Benazir Bhutto.

The expose was made by the former diplomat Rajiv Dogra in his book, “Where Borders Bleed: An Insider’s Account of Indo-Pak Relations”. Dogra, a Consul General of India in Karachi from 1992 to 1994, claimed that Benazir dismissed the idea of Gen Musharraf, the then DGMO, about such an operation.

“Though Musharraf painted a rosy picture of Pakistan winning the war and taking over Srinagar,” Dogra writes in his book. “But… she stood her ground against the army. This may have prevented the Kargil invasion at least once during her spell in office.”

Dogra, a 1974-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, describes Benazir as “liberal by temperament, whose western education had made her more receptive in her relationship with the outside world.”
