Tense situation has been prevailing over the past two weeks in the campus of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri where students are boycotting classes and protesting against authorities over misappropriation of funds meant for the scholarship schemes.

Speaking to Kashmir Life over phone, students alleged that some officials including the Registrar M Rashid Chaudhary have diverted the money meant for awardees of various scholarship schemes to their personal accounts. They alleged that these scholarships were first being kept delayed every year. Students also alleged that the cheques of payees countersigned by Registrar were drawn through fake accounts in connivance with accounts section and bank employees.

Students said that under law, a Registrar cannot continue in the chair after a case is pending against him “but Chaudhary has been continuing as Registrar even after a case has been filed.”

Students said that the term of Registrar ends after four years but the person currently holding the post has been incumbent for the last eight years in brazen violation of norms.

“Besides,” they alleged, “he must be well-qualified with a PhD degree. Our Registrar is only an MSc holder.” They alleged that Chaudhary, who was allegedly involved in various scams in the past as well, has strong political support. “Even CM cannot remove him,” they said.

Students said that protests had been going on till midnight. “The VC directed hostel authorities not to let the girls inside who participated in the protest,” students said adding that it was only after the furious protests on their part that the girls we let in.

Students claimed that they were cane-charged during midnight resulting in injuries to many students. They also lamented the poor infrastructure condition of the varsity. They said that despite drawing hefty sum of money from students, authorities have failed to deliver.
