SRINAGAR: A young Agniveer from Manipur lost his life after being swept away by the swollen Chenab River on the night of August 28.
The soldier has been identified as Jimmy Ngamminlun Mate, son of Holkhothang Mate of Sahumphai in Manipur, who was serving in the 5th Assam Regiment. Officials said that after a sudden outburst of the Chenab River, Jimmy’s unit was forced to vacate its post when floodwaters overran the area.
“In the chaos of darkness, Jimmy was caught in the raging current and went missing. Search operations were immediately launched but there was no trace of him for several hours,” a police official said.
After intense efforts by the Army, police and rescue teams, his body was recovered from the river, the official added. (KNT)
