SRINAGAR: In a significant development for road connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has officially taken charge of maintaining the Mughal Road stretch from Bufliaz to Pir Ki Gali. The handover from the Public Works Department (PWD) was done by District Development Commissioner Vikas Kundal who completed it with all the necessary formalities.

The Mughal Road, spanning 84 kilometres across the Pir Panjal mountain range, is a vital alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The route is crucial for civilian travel, trade, and security forces, particularly during periods when the primary highway is closed due to weather-related disruptions.

Deputy Commissioner Kundal emphasised the importance of maintaining this strategic route and urged the BRO to enhance infrastructure support during winter months. “The BRO’s expertise, resources, and dedicated workforce make it well-suited to manage operations in challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions,” he stated.

This transition aims to ensure the Mughal Road remains accessible throughout winter, benefiting local communities and strengthening strategic mobility in the region. The BRO’s assumption of responsibility is expected to improve road infrastructure and provide consistent maintenance, particularly in harsh conditions when snowfall often disrupts travel.

The move builds on a formal decision made in October 2024 to entrust the BRO with the management of the Mughal Road, reflecting its historical and strategic importance as a key link between the Kashmir Valley and the districts of Poonch and Rajouri. The improved upkeep and accessibility of this road are set to significantly enhance connectivity and support the region’s socio-economic development.
