SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Saturday said he hoped the Centre would fulfil its commitments on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the issue was among several matters raised by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function, Choudhary said Omar Abdullah raises issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir whenever he visits Delhi and meets the Prime Minister, Home Minister or other Union ministers.
He said the Chief Minister’s meeting with Shah covered restoration of statehood, rationalisation of reservations, finalisation of business rules and the proposed first international Filmfare festival in Srinagar.
Choudhary said the government expected the Home Minister to honour commitments regarding statehood that had been made in Parliament, before the Supreme Court and to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He alleged that failure to fulfil the commitment would amount not only to a betrayal of the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also of Parliament and the judiciary.
