Srinagar: Chaos unfolded in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar after gun shots were fired near Taj Hotel on Saturday afternoon following rumours about the presence of suspected militants in the area. Within no time a large crowd assembled near the hotel and police resorted to heavy teargas shelling to disperse them. As people fled to safety, markets closed spontaneously and roads became deserted.
The main markets around Lal Chowk, which were bustling with shoppers, saw people running in all directions. For first half-an-hour nobody was sure about the cause of gunshots as rumours started making rounds.
Meanwhile, an army convoy was attacked by suspected militants near JVC hospital in Bemina area of Srinagar. According to a initial report, at least three army men had sustained bullet injuries. However official spokespersons denied to comment on the incident as of now.
