According to Reuters, Xi said the international rule of law must not be applied selectively, warning against a return to “the law of the jungle” in reference to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. “The rule of law cannot be used when convenient and discarded when not,” he told the visiting UAE leader.

The remarks come as tensions in the Gulf intensify following the breakdown of recent talks between Washington and Tehran. Since late February, Iran has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States has initiated a blockade of Iranian ports, accusing Tehran of “economic terrorism,” Reuters reported. The conflict has significantly impacted global energy flows, with Chinese oil and gas imports declining and vessels stranded in the strategic waterway.

In a parallel account, Khaleej Times reported that Xi welcomed Sheikh Khaled and praised the strength of longstanding China-UAE relations, emphasising continued cooperation across economic, investment and strategic sectors. The UAE Crown Prince conveyed greetings from President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discussed expanding bilateral ties.

Both sides also reviewed regional and international developments, stressing the importance of coordinated efforts to support peaceful resolutions to conflicts and maintain global stability, Khaleej Times reported.

A statement issued by the Embassy of China said Xi reiterated Beijing’s commitment to promoting peace through dialogue and outlined four principles for stability in the Middle East: adherence to peaceful coexistence, respect for national sovereignty, commitment to international law, and balancing development with security.

Xi noted that China and the UAE would continue to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership, expanding cooperation in energy, trade, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. He also called for stronger coordination on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and BRICS.

Sheikh Khaled, according to the Chinese statement, praised China’s “constructive role” in global affairs and expressed the UAE’s willingness to work closely with Beijing to facilitate a ceasefire, ensure maritime security, and stabilise global energy markets.

The visit reflects growing economic and geopolitical alignment between China and Gulf nations, with both sides signalling intent to expand trade and investment ties while navigating heightened instability in the Middle East.
