Clashes erupted in the hometown of Afzal Guru in Sopore town of Baramulla district after Zuhar prayers on Thursday after youth staged a protest against demanding his mortal remains.

Reports said that soon after the Zuhar prayers hundreds of people assembled near historic Jamia Masjid Sopore and started marching towards main Chowk Sopore.

The civilian protesters were demanding the mortal remains of Afzal Guru who was secretly hanged and buried in Tihar jail in New Delhi.

Police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the area resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesters, triggering clashes.

Meanwhile all shops and other business establishments remained closed in Sopore and other parts of the town while public transport remained off the roads
