Clashes erupt in Sangam after rumours of killing of local militant in Nowgam gunfight

Soon after the rumors made rounds that one of the slain militant killed in Nowgam Srinagar was the local militant from Sangam area of Islamabad district, people, especially youth took to the streets and clashes with government forces, resulting in injuries to many protestors.

Reports said that scores of the protestors shouting pro-freedom and anti-government slogans pelted government forces with stones. The government forces used tear gas shells and pellets to disperse the protesting people which led to the injuries to many protestors. The clashes were going on when the last reports came in.

Earlier, clashes were also reported from Nowgam area of Srinagar near the gunfight site. Reports said that after the news of an encounter in the area spread, youth in scores hit the streets in Soothu Kothair Bagh area of Nowgam. However, there were no reports of any injuries till this report was filed.

The gunfight in Nowgam started after a joint team of army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the area, after receiving specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. The encounter has now ended up with the killing of two militants and police has not revealed any details of the slain militants yet.
