Intense clashes erupted in Sopore town of Baramulla district soon after people assembled outside Jamia Masjid Sopore.

Chanting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, the protests were led by district president Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Abdul Ghani Bhat.

Locals said that amid anti-India and pro-freedom slogans   forces appeared on the scene and fired tear smoke shells and pellets “indiscriminately” to disperse the protesters and tried to arrest Abdul Ghani Bhat.

However, people in large numbers pelted bricks and stones on forces and in response forces restored to tear gas shelling.

Over half a dozen people have been reported injured during the clashes.

Clashes were going on when reports last came in.
