SRINAGAR

Clashes erupted in Maisuma locality of Srinagar city after police detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik during a protest march against the “terror created by Village Defence Committees”.

Three people, including a mother-son duo and a political leader, were killed in past week by members of the VDC.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that shortly after Friday prayers scores of people led by Malik took out a rally demanding immediate disbanding of Village Defence Committees. The protesters carrying placards and banners tried to march towards Clock Tower, however, a police party intercepted them and detained Malik along with his other party activists.

The detention of Malik sparked protests and shutdown in the locality while number of agitated youth resorted to stone-pelting prompting police to burst tear-smoke shells to disperse them.

Reports said a stone directly hit SDPO Kothibagh Fahad Tak’s one eye. As the blood started oozing out from the eye of the police officer, he was bundled into a vehicle and immediately shifted to 92 Base Army hospital where from he was flown to All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi.

Confirming the incident, a police official said that Tak sustained a serious injury to his eye and the doctors at 92 Base Army hospital referred him to AIIMS New Delhi.
