The facility, being constructed under the CAPEX/SASCI scheme on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis, will have the capacity to process around 5,000 sheep and goats a day.

Omar said the project would help bring Srinagar’s meat-processing infrastructure in line with modern standards.

The proposed abattoir will feature mechanised systems for slaughtering, carcass handling, processing, chilling and cold storage, besides sanitation and by-product management facilities.

According to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the project is intended to improve meat hygiene and food safety, provide safer working conditions and strengthen veterinary and quality-control mechanisms.

The facility will also have systems for scientific waste management, including a bio-digestion unit and an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to treat organic waste and wastewater generated during operations.

The systems are expected to reduce pollution and foul odour, facilitate resource recovery and allow treated water to be reused for suitable non-potable purposes.

Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Rajya Sabha MP Gurwinder Singh Oberoi, Lal Chowk MLA Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed, SMC Commissioner Fazl ul Haseeb and other officials were present at the foundation-laying ceremony.

Once completed, the abattoir is expected to provide Srinagar with a regulated and scientifically managed facility for sheep and goat slaughtering and meat processing.
