In a first major move that she wishes to engage non-voters, Chief Minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday spent almost half of the day with the school children. She interacted with them, sung with them and accompanying them aboard a special fortnightly train specially meant for school children.

Officials accompanying the Chief Minister said she flew to Banihal during wee hours where she board the train. “With every passing station, the local students from private and government schools started boarding the train and the process continued till Baramulla,” the official said. “She visited them on every boggy and interacted with them. There were joint school prayers, rhyme recitations and singing sessions.”

The official said that the students were served refreshments on board. The organizers had invited sportspersons Tajamul Islam and Hashim as well to offer them as sports role models. “It was education on wheels,” the official said. “She de-boarded the train at around 1 pm thus spending almost an entire day with them.”

The train is a special intervention by Northern Railways. It will be operating once in a fortnight between Banihal and Baramulla and will be open for school students on prior booking basis.

Interestingly at every station the students boarded the train, they had local MLAs also accompanying them. Top officials from the state education department were also part of the day long activity.
