Congress Condemns Israeli Attack on Iran, Urges India to Push for Peace

SRINAGAR: The Congress party has strongly denounced Israel’s recent military strikes and targeted assassinations on Iranian territory, calling it a “dangerous escalation” with severe implications for regional and global stability. In a statement issued by Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh, the party described the operation as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and a provocation that threatens to “sow the seeds of further conflict.”

Ramesh said the Indian National Congress “unequivocally condemns” the attack, warning that continued military brinkmanship could ignite a broader war in an already fragile region. “This attack on Iran’s sovereignty and encroachment of its rights, whether through aerial strikes or covert killings, only deepens instability,” he said.

The Congress stressed that the only legitimate and sustainable way forward is through “diplomacy, dialogue, and international cooperation.” It called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Highlighting India’s unique position, the party noted that New Delhi has maintained civilisational ties with Iran while also building strategic relations with Israel in recent decades. “This unique position gives our country the moral responsibility and the diplomatic leverage to act as a bridge for de-escalation and peace,” Ramesh said.

The statement also pointed to the presence of lakhs of Indian citizens living and working across West Asia, underlining that peace in the region is both a geopolitical concern and a vital national interest for India.

“India must speak clearly, act responsibly, and use every diplomatic channel available to defuse tensions and promote a return to dialogue,” the statement concluded.
