SRINAGAR: Suspected militants shot dead a special police official (SPO) after he came out of Eid prayers in a Kulgam village, police said.

Identified as Fayaz Ahmad Shah son of Mohammad Ramzan Shah, the resident of Zangalpora was coming out of Eidgah in Augam village when suspected militants shot him dead. A senior police officer said that some people approached him and asked him to accompany them. “He refused and they shot him dead,” the officer said.

Police sources said he was not an SPO and in fact, he was promoted to be a constable. “He was on mandatory training and had come on leave to celebrate Eid with his family when he was attacked,” the police sources said. Shah’s home is almost 7 km from the main town.

So far, no militant outfit has staked the claim for the Eid day killing.

In Srinagar, a police spokesman said they have registered a case and started investigations. Offering details, the spokesman said the 34-year-old Shah is survived by two daughters of five and two years of age, respectively, besides his wife, now widowed, and aged parents.
