SRINAGAR: Residents of Chechkout village on the highway to Jammu beat up a policeman on Saturday evening after they mistook him for a braid-chopper, reports reaching here said.

Detailed revealed that after the incident, a police team from Awantipora police station rescued the cop from the locals after reassuring the residents that he was not a hair-cutter. He actually was on his way to his duty in south Kashmir.

The unfortunate cop was identified as Zakir Hussain Malik, a resident of Tangdaar. Malik had accompanied his wife to Srinagar hospital early in the morning after she fell ill there. They are both living in Islamabad town, the place of his posting.

Police said after rescuing the cop, they have arrested some youth for questioning in this regard.
