A policeman was thrashed mercilessly while his uniform including cap was set blaze by protesting youth after August 15 function in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that soon after the culmination of Aug 15 function at Degree College Kulgam, scores of youth took to streets and resorted to heavy stone-pelting near main market.

Witnesses added that an unarmed SPO namely Ishtiyaq Ahmed after the function boarded in a private vehicle and left for his home. “The youth stopped us near main market and checked our identity cards. However, when they saw Ishtiyaq in police uniform, they dragged him and gave him a sound thrashing,” an eyewitness Farooq Ahmed said.

“The youth after beating the cop, forced him to undress and set his uniform on fire. The cop was forced to stand naked in the middle of the road. He somehow managed to give slip to youth when they were busy in tossing up his blazing uniform in air,” eyewitnesses said.

Reports said that due to stone-pelting in the main Kulgam market, political leaders and other officials who attended the August 15 function changed their routes to reach their respective destinations.
