SRINAGAR: Newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar on Friday said counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations would remain the Kashmir Police’s primary focus, as he reviewed security arrangements for Friday prayers across Srinagar.
Kumar made the remarks during his first field visit to Srinagar after assuming charge as IGP Kashmir on Thursday evening. He inspected security arrangements and inter-agency coordination at locations expecting large congregations following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW).
“Operations have remained our first priority in the past and will continue to remain our first priority,” Kumar told reporters while responding to questions about the recent increase in counter-insurgency operations in the Valley.
He said security forces had carried out several operations in different parts of Kashmir in recent days, resulting in significant recoveries.
During the visit, the IGP assessed the deployment and coordination of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies at major congregation points. He said the immediate objective was to examine coordination among the forces deployed on the ground and ensure effective security arrangements.
“I joined you yesterday, and today we are here first to assess the coordination of our police team and other agencies,” he said.
Kumar said similar security assessments were being conducted at other major prayer locations in Srinagar to facilitate crowd management, smooth movement and maintenance of law and order.
He also appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel in view of additional security measures and traffic restrictions around major prayer venues.
“Many people are offering prayers today, so we seek your cooperation. We understand that movement is difficult for the public,” he said.
Kumar assured residents that the Kashmir Zonal Police would continue working to protect lives and property and take necessary measures to maintain peace and stability in the region.
“I congratulate everyone and want to assure the people that the Zonal Police is always there for you,” he said.
Kumar assumed charge as IGP Kashmir on Thursday evening and has since begun reviewing the security situation and operational preparedness across the Valley.
