Principal District and Sessions judge, Kupwara on Friday rejected a bail plea of two drug peddlers in the north Kashmir district on Friday.

The spokesman said court rejected bail of Mohammad Kamal Dar son of Mohammad Samander Dar of Paripora, Batbugh, Kupwara and Shabir Ahmad Chuhan son of Ghulam Mohammad Chauhan of Dardpora Lalpora.

On 08 August last year, Police Station Kupwara recovered 350 grams of brown sugar from the possession of Dar while on February 1 this year, Charas weighing 4 kgs were recovered from the possession of Chauhan. Both the accused had filed bail application before the court.

While rejecting the bail applications, the court observed that the quantity of drug seized from the accused was of commercial quantity and they were involved in heinous offences. The court observed that the courts owe a duty towards society and have to play a role in eradicating the drug menace.

“Executive or Judiciary, there are chances that it may engulf the whole society,” the court said, adding, “The drug trade and drug consumption has affected the social fabric of our society.” The Principal District & Sessions judge further observed that courts cannot shut eyes to the glaring reality of the ill effects of the drug trade.
