SRINAGAR: The last 24 hours witnessed the highest ever number of deaths taking places in Jammu and Kashmir. A total of 73 deaths took place overnight taking the death toll to 3222.

Kashmir lost 19 citizens and Jammu 54 in the last 24 hours.

Dr Mustahson Farooq Fazli, an Associate Professor in Zoology at the University of Kashmir died of Covid19 after losing his battle against contagion after a month.

Besides, 3344 new infections were registered across Jammu and Kashmir in the last 24 hours. This was despite the lockdown that has literally paralysed life across the erstwhile state.

Now the death toll of Covid19 in Jammu and Kashmir is 3222 people including 1729 in Kashmir and 1493 in Jammu.

As many as 24 deaths took place in Jammu city and eighty in Srinagar city, the information revealed by the government said.

The district-wise details suggest that Kashmir lost three citizens each in Kupwara and Shopian, two each in Anantnag and Bandipore and one in Kulgam.

Apart from 24 deaths reported from Jammu city, the region lost 10 citizens from Rajouri (this is the highest number so far), six in Poonch, five in Udhampur, three in Kathua, and two each in Samba, Ramban, and Reasi.

In the last 24 hours, officials said 3344 new Covid-19 positives were reported from across Jammu and Kashmir. Of them, Srinagar alone accounted for 495. Jammu, the other capital of the erstwhile state reported 613 cases.

Of the new cases detected in the last 24 hours, Kashmir accounts for 1926 cases against 1418 of the Jammu division.

In Kashmir, the new cases include 118 from Baramulla, 376 from Budgam, 145 from Pulwama, 124 from Kupwara, 228 from Anantnag, 137 from Bandipora, 82 from Ganderbal, 164 from Kulgam, and 57 from Shopian.

From Jammu, officials said Udhampur reported 228, Rajouri 106, Doda 90, Kathua 115, Samba 89, Kishtwar 27, Poonch 56, Ramban 43, and Reasi 51.

Right now, Jammu and Kashmir has 50852 active cases, which includes 30136 in Kashmir 20716 in Jammu. It means Kashmir has almost double the active cases in comparison to Jammu.
