SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir recorded 3,366 cases of crime against women in 2024, the lowest in the past five years, according to data shared by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development in the Lok Sabha.
The figures, based on data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), show that the UT registered 3,405 cases in 2020, 3,937 in 2021, 3,716 in 2022, 3,653 in 2023, and 3,366 in 2024, indicating a year-on-year decline of nearly eight per cent.
The information was provided by Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The ministry said that while crime data is compiled by the NCRB, maintaining law and order and investigating crimes against women are primarily the responsibility of the respective state governments and Union Territory administrations.
The ministry noted that increased reporting of crimes in many parts of the country has also been linked to greater public awareness and the operationalisation of initiatives such as the Women Helpline (181), Child Helpline (1098), Emergency Response Support System (112), Zero FIR and e-FIR facilities.
The Centre said it continues to implement several schemes aimed at women’s safety, including One Stop Centres, Women Helpline-181, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Shakti Sadan and the Mission Shakti programme. It also highlighted initiatives funded under the Nirbhaya Fund, such as the Emergency Response Support System, Safe City projects, Women Help Desks at police stations and cybercrime reporting mechanisms.
