While it clear that his stint outside the state legislature has proved a windfall for Congress’s controversial leader from Bandipore, what is interesting is there is no unfair distribution of the wealth between Usman Majid and his wife Firdousa. In the affidavit which is mandatory for contesting polls, Usman says he is politician unlike his wife who is a business women.
While Usman drives in a Pajero worth Rs 23.50 lakh, Firdousa is the proud owner of a Toyota Fortuner and a Scorpio jointly worth Rs 32.50 lakh.
Interestingly both the partners have accounts in the same bank branches and almost equal – three each. While he has deposits of Rs 874731 with the banks, she has nearly double – Rs 1569928. Besides she has nearly Rs 1.5 million worth of gold. She has five times insurance cover than him!
Both of them own landed and housing properties. While she owns a flat in Trikuta Nagar plus some land, Usman has inherited the house and the couple jointly owns their Indira Nagar house. He has shown immovable property worth Rs 2.65 crores and she owns property worth Rs 85 lakh.
Interesting part of the story is that the couple has declared that baring a small fraction of their property which is inherited, most of it they have created on their own. Usman has declared a liability of Rs 2.70 lakh on account of housing loan while his wife owes Rs 11.38 lakh to banks on account of car loan.
Usman, a graduate who shot to prominence as Bandipore MLA in 2002 lost to PDP in 2008. Now he is pitted against Nizamuddin Bhat again in 2014.
Interestingly, however, the property statement of Usman Majid in 2008 was not as impressive as it is this time. The couple owned a Scorpio and many landed properties had skipped listing!
