Chief Secretary M Iqbal Khandey has sought a voluntary retirement three months before he is due to attain superannuation.
Khandey, an IAS officer of the 1978 batch, has forwarded his resignation letter to the government, sources said.
It was not immediately confirmed whether his resignation letter was accepted or not.
Sources said there are efforts underway to request him to reconsider the decision. At least two cabinet ministers have had detailed close door meetings with the top bureaucrat, appointed as JK CS on February 18, 2013. Outcome of the meetings was not immediately known.
