The Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdul Wahid Saturday launched the “International Journal of Communication and Social Research,” a research journal of the University’s Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ).

Describing the publishing and subsequent launch of the journal as a ‘historic step’, the CUK Vice-Chancellor, during the journal release function, asked other departments to start working on such research journals with immediate effect. “The Department of Convergent Journalism has taken the lead and other department should follow it,” Prof Abdul Wahid said while congratulating the staff and students for their concerted efforts in preparing the journal.

Referring to the contents in the journal, CUK VC emphasized the need of publishing research papers, which had local relevance. He asked the faculty of Convergent Journalism to sustain the publication of the journal and maintain its quality in all respect.

He said the Universities across the world have three important activities viz Teaching, Research and Extension. “The teaching activity has started in all the departments of the University, and now we are going to initiate research in these,” Prof Abdul Wahid added. He assured full support and cooperation to the faculty of the department in their endeavors and procuring of essential state-of-the-art equipment for training the students.

Coordinator, DCJ, Shahnaz Bashir said the Department had received 28 research papers out of which only eight were selected for the inaugural issue. “The published papers were scrutinized thoroughly and for the next journal issue, the Department has already received 37 papers,” Shahnaz Bashir said.

He said the research done for the sake of gaining Academic Performance Index (API) scores which are utilized in career advancement schemes and promotions must be seriously discouraged, and rather researchers must indulge only in that research work which in the end produces original knowledge.

Shahnaz said the Department has procured latest gadgets used in television production and other multimedia items. He said that some of the pass outs of the Department are working in several prestigious newspaper institutions including Times of India, Indian Express and news channels like CNN-IBN.
