Cyber Police Recovers Rs 52 Lakh from Online Scams in North Kashmir

   

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday reported significant action against drug peddling in South Kashmir’s Anantnag and cyber fraud in North Kashmir’s Sopore, reflecting intensified efforts to tackle narcotics and digital financial crimes across the region.

In Anantnag, two individuals were arrested in separate operations carried out by Police Station Bijbehara. “At a checkpoint in Gadhanjipora, police apprehended a local resident, Bashir Ahmad Dar, son of Habibullah Dar. During his personal search, 12 grams of brown sugar-like substance packed in 73 polythene packets was recovered. He was arrested on the spot and a case under FIR No. 139/2025 was registered,” police said.

In another operation, police intercepted Showkat Ahmad Kumar, son of Ghulam Mohammad Kumar, a resident of Waghama, at Katritang Bijbehara. “Upon search, approximately 11.60 kilograms of poppy straw was recovered from his possession. He was arrested and booked under FIR No. 140/2025.”

Meanwhile, in Sopore, Cyber Police Station revealed that since its establishment it has received 279 complaints of cyber fraud, mostly involving investment scams, phishing, SIM cloning, impersonation, and other forms of digital deception. “The total financial loss reported in these cases is Rs 1.52 crore. Police have recovered Rs 52.25 lakh, which has been credited back to victims’ accounts. An additional Rs 23.81 lakh has been lien-marked or frozen in accounts of cyber fraudsters, with legal proceedings underway.”
