SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Monday defended the continuation of the Darbar Move, saying the practice reflected the aspirations of people across the Union Territory and should be respected.

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Rather said the Darbar Move had been discontinued for a brief period but was revived last year following a considered decision by the government.

“There is nothing new about the Darbar Move. It has been going on for years, except for a brief pause of a few years,” he said.

The Speaker said the government would continue serving people across Jammu and Kashmir during its six-month stay in Jammu, just as it had done in Kashmir.

He said the revival of the practice was also in response to the wishes of people in the Jammu region.

“Our brothers in Jammu wanted the Darbar Move to be revived, and therefore it should be revived,” Rather said, adding that the aspirations of people across the Union Territory must be respected.
