Shopkeepers of Hazratbal whose shops come under Waqf Board held a protest rally at Press Enclave Wednesday demanding revocation of Waqf order directing the shop owners to pay Rs 38 per sq ft every month.

“This means we will have to pay some 7000 rupees as against 400 to 500 rupees that we used to pay until now,” said Gulzar Ahmad, a store owner.

The protesters said that they were shocked to see the order when it reached them yesterday. “Our business is not that big so that we could afford this sum of money to be paid as rentals,” they said.

Shouting slogans, the protesters threatened of “dire consequences” if the order wasn’t cancelled.
