In a sudden crackdown on alleged stone pelters, police fired shells and arrested at least five youths in Srinagar’s Parimpora areas on Monday.

Notably, early this morning, some unidentified persons set ablaze two passenger vehicles apparently “in reaction to violation of shutdown call” in the same area. The Sumos were coming from Kupwara to Srinagar.

Kashmir Life received several calls from locals of Parimpora who said, “police have sieged the whole area and arrested several youths.”

“The Parimpora-Qamarwari road has been blocked and forces are not allowing us to come out of our homes,” a local said, “they even fired tear gas shells.”

A police official from Police Station Parimpora told Kashmir Life that groups of youths come out of lanes in Parimpora and resort to stone pelting. “We are arresting stone pelters only,” the cop said.

The detained youths include two tenth class students who “had just returned from their school”. They were identified as Shahid Nazir Bhat and Faizan Mir. The duo was neighbours at one point of time but Shahid’s family moved to Nowgam some time ago.

“This morning, my son accompanied Faizan to his home after writing their practical examination at Khalsa High School,” mother of Shahid told Kashmir Life over phone. “Shahid came to Parimpora this morning only to meet his friend and class mate who later went to attend their examination.”

Soon after the duo returned from school, mother of Faizan said, “the duo was arrested when they went to offer Zuhr Namaz.”

“They are innocent,” she said.
