Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani was arrested as he defied curfew on Wednesday when he marched towards UN Office here.

Hurriyat Conference (g) sources said that over 100 people had assembled outside the residence-cum-office of Geelani when he started the march.

“But Geelani Sahab was stopped by forces deployed in huge numbers from moving towards Sonwar,” sources said, “later, he led a Sit-In protest demonstration on Srinagar Airport highway.’

Sources added that forces did not allow Geelani and other protestors to pro-long the sit-in protest. “He was arrested and whisked away to Humhama Police Station,” they said.

Meanwhile, the sources added, youths resorted to intense stone pelting after forces did not allow them to take out the 72-hour long UN march.

“Intense tear gas shelling is going in Pirbagh area,” sources said, “it is chaos and no further details can be provided this time.”

An office bearer of Geelani led Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) told Kashmir Life that two youths were arrested by police which led to the protest demonstration at Pirbagh.

“Aijaz Ahmad Malik, Fayaz Ahmad Malik, both residents of Pirbagh were arrested by police along with Geelani Sahab,” the TeH leader said, “people started protest demonstrations demanding their release.”

Government clamped down with harshest curfew today to block UN march. Kashmir has been witnessing renewed mass civil uprising since July 09, 2016 which was triggered by the death of popular militant commander Burhan Wani on July 08, 2016.
