Intense clashes erupted in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday.

Police sources said that one youth was injured when forces injured fire in Batergam area of Kupwara. “He was hit in his leg,” sources said.

News reports said that hundreds of people organised a march from Batergam to main Chowk Kupwara, however, forces opened fire to disperse the protesters resulting in injury to one youth.

The youth, whose identity was not immediately known, has been shifted to Srinagar.

Meanwhile, forces resorted to tear smoke shelling in Papchan area of Bandipora when residents, mostly youth clashed with forces who tried to disperse people holding sit-in protest in the area.

Earlier, in the morning people from Papachan, Madar and Gamoora assembled near the local Jamia Masjid to hold special prayers for Burhan Wani and 67 other civilians killed by forces since July 8.

As the people started reciting special prayers police reached the spot to disperse them, however, youth present there clashed with them. Police fired dozens of tear smoke canisters in retaliation. Scores of youth have sustained minor injuries.

Witnesses said the forces intercepted a peaceful protest rally and resorted to teargas shelling in the area.

Meanwhile, residents in Ward 6 of Bandipora have erected a tent on road for a sit-in protest.

Protest demonstrations were also reported from Naidkhai and Nowgam areas of Sumbal.
