#Day52: Protests Erupt In Bandipora

Intense clashes erupted in Bandipora on Monday when a protest march from Watpora area of the district was on way to main town.

Local sources said that the hundreds of people who were marching towards Bandipora main town were intercepted by forces at Kaloosa which resulted in stone pelting and subsequent tear gas shelling.

A news report said that an elderly man, a resident of Watpora, was allegedly beaten up by the army late Sunday night.

Identified as Muhammad Shafi Bhat (55), son of late Muhammad Ismail, resident of Bhat Mohalla Bala Watpora, was hit with gun butts when he came out of his house to take a stroll after dinner.

Early today, the local residents came out on roads protesting against the “barbarism”.

Bhat was rushed to district hospital where he had to get eleven stitches.

Meanwhile, reports said that personnel of Rashtriya Rifles are manning Bandipora-Srinagar road. “I was on way to Manasbal and army stopped me at least 5 places,” a commuter said.
