One youth is feared drowned in Parimpora belt of Srinagar, residents said. They alleged that the boy was part of a group of people who were chased by the CRPF.
Local and family sources said that at least four youths jumped in river Jhelum to save themselves from the para-military forces late in the afternoon.
“Three of the four youths could manage reach the Northern bank of Jhelum near recently constructed steel bridge in Parimpora area,” residents told Kashmir Life on phone, “however, one is still missing.”
Police sources confirmed that protestors were chased by forces. “One boy, who jumped into the river, has not been recovered so far,” one senior officer said.
Locals identified the missing youth as Danish Sultan Haroon, son of Mohammad Sultan Haroon, a resident of New Colony Palpora, Noorbagh Srinagar. He was a teenager.
“Locals are on job to find the body but water is flowing fast and the river bed is deep at the spot,” they said.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted in the area and locals said many were injured due to pellets. Locals alleged that they are trying to retrieve the body “but we are being shelled”.
MLA Eidgah, Mubarak Gul, said, “dozens of peaceful protestors were injured when forces fired pellets and tear gas shells on them in Palpora this evening.”
Demanding transfer of cops from the area, he said, “forces have done damages worth lakhs of rupees.”
