In a major “Fidayeen” attack on an Indian army brigade headquarters in North Kashmir on Sunday, at least seventeen army men were killed.

Reports said that scores of other army men were injured who were airlifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Badambagh Srinagar. Many of the injured were critical.

Around 5 AM today, suspected militants, who were said to be Fidayeen – those who are ready to fight till dead – attacked the army brigade near Line of Control (LoC) in Uri. Four of the attackers died in the attack and police sources said that an intense search operation has been launched.

“Seventeen army men have been killed in the Fidayeen attack, so far” reports said, “(and) in retaliation, four militants have died.”

The reports, however, added, the bodies of the slain militant are yet to be recovered.

The Sunday attack is a major militant attack on any army installation in 2016.

In 2015, an army depot was attacked by suspected militants and damaged in Kupwara district.

Police sources had said that family of an army Brigadier posted in the army brigade was missing till last reports.
