Despite government’s announcement of imposition of curfew in Shopian district on Monday, hundreds of people marched towards Vihil Shopian this morning to hold a pro-freedom rally.

Reports reaching here said that locals of Vihil had planned a pro-freedom rally in the premises of a local Darasgah today. However, police in a statement issued last night had said that curfew will be imposed in the area from this morning till evening.

“Hundreds of people had reached Vihil rally venue,” local sources said, “preparations were going on for the massive freedom rally when forces raided the venue.”

They said that Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF and police men attacked the venue in which at least six civilians sustained injuries.

“The forces fired tear gas shells and pellets due tow which people were injured,” locals said.

They said that forces patrolled the whole area and people fled for safety. “There is 62 RR camp in the vicinity of Vihil. RR men came from there who brought cutters along with them to clear the road blockade,” locals said, “trees were cut down to block the entry of forces and at many places, big rocks were placed on roads to make it difficult for forces to enter but they made the road motorable.”
