A worker of a pro-India political party has been shot dead in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on late Wednesday night.

Reports said that Peoples Conference worker Ghulam Nabi Khoja was fired upon outside his home in Kralgund village of Handwara area.

“Some unknown gunmen, four to five in number, have called him outside his home, and fired upon him near an electricity transformer,” local sources said.

The incident happened around 8:45 PM, police said.

“On hearing gun shots, people and his family members rushed to the spot finding Khoja in pool of blood,” local sources added.

A police cop from Handwara Police Control Room told Kashmir Life that Khoja was rushed to hospital but “he has succumbed to his injuries”. “He was referred to Baramulla hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” police said.

“Khoja was rushed to Handwara hospital in serious condition,” local sources said. “He had received multiple wounds.”

Khoja was in late forties and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. “One of his daughters is married while his two sons are studying,” local sources said.

They added that Khoja was working in education department. “His job was regularised in 2015,” they said, “his family has vast fields of rice and vegetables and apple orchards as well.”

Sources said, “Khoja was an active worker Sajad Gani Lone led Peoples Conference since the days of late Ab Gani Lone.”
