Thousands of members of Shiite community on Wednesday took out processions in Srinagar.

It is tenth of Muharram, Youm-e-Ashoora, when Imam Hussain (RA) was martyred in the city of Karbala in Iraq 1400 years ago.

A major Muharram procession was taken out from Gulshanbagh Bota Kadal to Zadibal.

“Thousands of mourners joined the Muharram procession popular as – Zul Janah – which started from Bota Kadal and ended at Zadibal area of Srinagar,” a participant said. This was the largest Muharram procession in Srinagar, so far, in 2016.

Some participants during the peaceful procession were holding placards which read: “we want justice”, “stop killing in Kashmir”.

“The message of Grandson of prophet Mohammad (SAW) is fight against injustice,” a mourner said, “we are following that path and demanding justice for the people of valley who are killed and blinded.”

J&K Government had imposed curfew in Srinagar parts today in view of the Muharram processions which were banned in Kashmir since militancy broke out in the valley.

Early today, scores of mourners managed to reach Lal Chowk and marched on MA Road from Government College of Education before police swung in to action and dispersed them off.

For the first time in Doda, Muslims held a unity rally on Youm-e- Ashoora. Thousands of people attended it and raised pro-freedom slogans. Doda houses a few members of Shiite community as well.
