Despite Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s appeal who had said that no protest should happen in and around the historic Jamia Masjid of old city without his call, violent protests broke out in Nowhatta square on Friday afternoon where masked youth confronted with a posse of police and paramilitary party.
The protests rocked the area shortly after the Friday prayers when youth started gathering in alleys, lanes and bylanes.
Ire was especially directed towards Shampora area where the Nowhatta Police Station is located.
Friday’s protest was apparently fuelled by the unabated cycle of nocturnal raids and arrest spree, which separatists say is likely to fan the tension in the area.
