SRINAGAR: Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’ only surviving son-in-law, and brother in law of National Conference President and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah breathed his last on Sunday late night in Srinagar after a brief illness.
Sources said he breathed his last on Sunday night. He was unwell and was at home.
“My uncle Dr Mohd Ali Mattoo passed away earlier tonight after a brief illness. At this difficult time the family appeals to everyone to respect the guidelines to not gather either at his residence or the graveyard. Your prayers from your homes will give peace to his soul,” Omar Abdullah tweeted.

Dr Mattoo, who earlier served the SKIMS, is survived by wife Suriya Matto and a daughter Nyla Ali Khan, a faculty member at Rose State College and member of Harvard-based Scholars Strategy Network. Dr Khan, the couple’s only child wrote a brief emotional note on her Facebook:
“Abba has peacefully transitioned to the next world.
He came from God, and he has returned to God!
I will honor, love, and cherish his memories for as long as I live!
I know that my family and friends will celebrate his incredible life, compassion, empathy, and enormous contributions. He remains surrounded by those who love him.
Abba will be buried in our ancestral graveyard, exactly as he wished.
By God’s grace, I got to see him and spend quality time with him. He and I had the satisfaction that we spent time with each other.
He will always walk beside me, and he lives in his grandchild.
My mother, Faisal, Iman, and I appreciate the messages of our relatives, friends, and well-wishers.”
Dr Mattoo and Ghulam Mohammad Shah were married to two daughters of Sheikh Abdullah – Suriya and Khalida. Sheikh had three sons, Dr Farooq, Dr Mustafa Kamal and Tariq Abdullah. Tariq died a few years ago.
