Dr Mohammad Shafi Bhat Passes Away at 85

   

SRINAGAR: Dr Mohammad Shafi Bhat, a veteran physician and former member of the State Medical Service, passed away at SKIMS, Srinagar, on Saturday morning after a brief battle with cancer. He was 85.

A resident of Bagh-e-Mehtab, Srinagar, and formerly of Sonawar Bagh, Dr Bhat breathed his last at around 9:45 am, leaving behind his wife, children, siblings and a large circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances.

Dr Bhat was a graduate of the third batch of Government Medical College, Srinagar. He served in the State Medical Service for several decades before moving to Madinah Al-Munawarrah, where he continued his professional service for more than two decades.

He returned to Kashmir in 2003 and subsequently lived in retirement away from active medical practice.

Known for his integrity, soft-spoken nature, courteous demeanour and dedication to his profession, Dr Bhat was widely remembered as a respected member of the medical fraternity and society.

He was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon.

The congregational Fateha prayers will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 9 am at the ancestral graveyard at Gupkar, Sonawar, near Kashmir Nursing Home.

A condolence meeting will be held thereafter at the family residence at Nund Reshi Lane, Sector B, Bagh-e-Mehtab, near the Water Tank.

Dr Bhat is survived by his wife, Dr Mehmood-un-Nisa; son Omar Shafi; daughters Dr Nayeema Shafi and Dr Humaira Shafi; sons-in-law Dr Arshad Wani and Dr Rashad Shafi; and brothers Dr Mohammad Ismail Bhat and Khalid Bashir Ahmad.
