Government on Thursday appointed Dr Shafqat Khan as new Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) commissioner.

Following the appointment order by the government, Dr Shafqat Khan assumed the charge of SMC commissioner on Thursday.

The newly appointed SMC commissioner after taking charge said, “My focus will remain on making the Srinagar neat and clean as the summer capital is being considered as the heart of Kashmir.”

He said that he wants to see Srinagar neat and clean. “I appeal people to co-operate with SMC in making the Srinagar neat and clean,” he added.

He said, “The people of Srinagar are having much expectations with the corporation and I will try my level best to fulfill the expectations of the people.”

Referring to the dog menace in Srinagar, Dr Shafqat said, “We will take a major initiative of sterilization of dogs in Srinagar so that the people across Srinagar will feel a sigh of relief.”

Talking about the street vendors, SMC commissioner said, “The street vendors who are illegally occupying the roads in Srinagar won’t be allowed to violate the norms from now onwards. The roadsides occupied by the street vendors are for the pedestrians while the roads are for the transport purpose and no one will be allowed to leave the pedestrians and commuters to suffer. We won’t allow any street vendor to occupy the roadsides or roads illegally.”

He said that those belonging to poor section among the street vendors will be registered first following which the registered street vendors will be rehabilitated.

While referring to the illegal constructions being raised in the Srinagar, SMC commissioner said, “I appeal to the people who are raising their buildings illegally to stop carrying such activities and the persons found constructing their buildings illegally will be dealt with strictly according to the law.”
