SRINAGAR: Authorities in Kishtwar have suspended the driving licence of a local resident for reckless and dangerous driving inside the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel.
Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Kishtwar, Tasleem Javaid, issued an order suspending driving licence No. JK17 20230000894, held by Esar Asif of Tund, Kishtwar, after a video surfaced showing him overtaking from the wrong side and endangering passenger safety on June 2, 2025.
The ARTO cited violations under Section 19(1)(d) and (f) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Rule 21 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, which mandates a minimum three-month suspension for such offences.
The order noted that the incident not only breached traffic laws but also posed a serious threat to public safety. “Such behaviour inside a high-speed tunnel puts lives at grave risk,” it read.
The driver has been directed to deposit the suspended licence immediately at the ARTO office. (JKNS)
