SRINAGAR

As panic rules Kashmir after the 7.7 rector scale earthquake, it has thrown life out if gear with almost every service malfunctioning. The light is off, roads are jammed and telecommunication is down. Even officials are not in a position to offer any details because they are also rushing here and there in panic.

Lal Chowk is converted into a huge parking lot as traffic moves at a snail’s pace.

Reports reaching from different areas of Kashmir, mostly from north Kashmir suggest, the earthquake has led to cracks of various buildings and in certain areas the public infrastructure is damaged.

Even in the old city, there are reports of some building suffering severe cracks. Indications suggest that the flood-soaked buildings across Srinagar may have suffered maximum damage but officials will take a bit of time to offer some ideas.

Reports from Sopore said the town is safe. Efforts to reach Uri and Kupwara failed. Pampore is all right and so is most of south Kashmir.

The earthquake is reported to have its epicenter in Hindukush mountains with 190 kms depth. Had it been slightly shallower it would have been catastrophic for the region. Reports that there are human losses in Pakistan have been received.

There is no report of any human loss in Kashmir, so far.
